Rug weaving in China is an ancient and honored craft as early as the 15th century, visitors were awed by the fabulous floor coverings that adorned the palaces of the Emperors and their courts.
Until the early 1970's, Chinese handmade rugs were banned from being imported into the United States. MER was the first American importer to recognize the quality, beauty and decorating potential of the magnificent rugs being made in China. Once restrictions were lifted in 1975, MER was the first to enter China and quickly establish relationships with the finest manufacturers.
Others rug companies soon followed and over time, the pressures of the market led the newcomers to use lower quality yarns, coarser weaving and less elaborate designs. Since 1975, when MER brought the first of these incredible rugs to America, we have retained their initial vision... refusing to compromise on quality or design. Today, we continue to focus on meeting the needs of consumers by:
** Expanding the line to offer a wide range of sizes.
** Adjusting design compositions and color palettes while retaining design integrity of the
original compositions.
** Refining the wool blends to greater enhance their rich, silky sheen.
** Monitoring the weaving process to increase its durability.
